What is franchising?   Well, there are a number of definitions.   Each one comes from a particular view.   In its purest form, franchising is granting rights to any individual to offer goods or services to the market place that are the property of the franchisor.   Another closely related and just as accurate definition is that franchising is purely a method of marketing and distribution, just as licensing, joint ventures, company owned outlets and cooperatives are.

Advantages to expanding through franchising include:

  • Franchisees provide necessary capital for the establishment of each outlet.
  • More rapid market penetration is possible which may be critical for some business models.
  • Franchisees are owners that treat the business with more TLC than employed managers.
  • Few new franchise starts fail.
